What are Simcoe Hops?

Simcoe hop pellets are a popular hop variety among brewers. They're known for their high alpha acid content, which gives them their bitter flavour.

They also have a unique aroma and flavour profile that makes them a great addition to many beer styles.

Simcoe pellets are a proprietary hop variety, which means they're protected by a trademark and can only be grown and sold by licensed growers.

What are Hop Pellets?

Hop pellets are a processed form of hops that are commonly used by brewers in the beer-making process. Hops are the flowers of the hop plant,

and they're used primarily for their bittering, flavouring, and aroma properties in beer.

Hop pellets are created by grinding up the whole hop cones and compressing the resulting powder into small, pellet-shaped pieces.

This process helps to preserve the hops and make them easier to store and handle. Hop pellets have become increasingly popular among brewers due to their convenience and ease of use,

and they're often preferred over whole leaf hops because they have a longer shelf life and are less prone to spoilage.

Additionally, hop pellets can be added directly to the boil without the need for a hop bag, making them a popular choice for home brewers and commercial brewers alike.

History of Simcoe Pellet Hops

Simcoe hops were developed in the 1990s by Yakima Chief Ranches, a hop grower in the Yakima Valley of Washington state.

They're a hybrid of several hop varieties, including Brewer's Gold, a German hop called Mittelfrüh, and an unknown wild American hop.

Simcoe hops were first released to the public in 2000 and quickly gained popularity among brewers for their unique flavour and aroma.

Simcoe Flavour and Aroma Profile

Simcoe hops are known for their complex aroma and flavour profile. They have a piney, resinous aroma with hints of citrus, grapefruit, and tropical fruit. The flavour profile is similar, with a piney, resinous taste and notes of citrus and tropical fruit. Simcoe hops can also have a slightly earthy or herbal flavour, which can be desirable in some beer styles.

Substitute Hops

If you can't find Simcoe hops, or if you're looking for a substitute, there are a few options available.

Amarillo, Citra, and Chinook hops are all similar in flavour and aroma to Simcoe hops and can be used as substitutes in your beer recipes.

We also have dried hop Simcoe Leaf Hops
