Flaked Oats 1kg

Flaked Oats contain high levels of lipids, beta glucans and gums, which impart a silky creamy mouthfeel adding a creaminess to beer.

Traditionally used as an adjunct in oatmeal stout, Flaked Oats are becoming increasingly popular in other beer styles too – particularly in New England IPAs and other big, hoppy beers for the texture and fullness of palate that they help to impart.

The more Flaked Oats in the grist, the greater the effect, but upon passing 20% of the grist, the beta glucans and gums will have a slowing effect on wort run off.

Adding flaked oats to the mash has an effect on the taste as the flakes are made from unmalted cereals. To get good conversion of the starch, first allow to boil for 30 minutes in a little water, then leave to cool. Mash together with the malt.

Flaked oats are used in many beer styles adding silky mouthfeel to most beers, an oatmeal stout is the typical beer that uses flaked oats.

Flaked oats and other adjuncts are used by adding to the cereal mash along with other malted grains during brewing
